Information for Specific Groups -- For Parents
An estimated one out of every four children in California is directly exposed
to violence as a victim or witness. New scientific research has shown that exposure to violence
has a measurable physiological impact on a child's developing brain. As a parent, it is important
for you to be aware of the potential consequences that chronic exposure to violence may have on your
child, such as increased depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, anger, alcohol and drug abuse,
and lower academic achievement. We hope this Web site will give you resources to reduce your children's
exposure to violence and to minimize the damage caused by exposure.
Parents who surround their children with consistent love, acceptance, respect, and encouragement are enriching the child’s emotional and physical development. Nurturing is a priceless form of mental enrichment that lasts a lifetime. Creating positive strengths in children is a successful approach to preventing youth violence and increasing a child's ability to be a responsible, caring, creative human being. The following information for parents was created by Dr. Bruce D. Perry.
