Information for Specific Groups -- For Community Members
An estimated one out of every four children in California is directly
exposed to violence as a victim or witness. New scientific research has shown that exposure
to violence has a measurable physiological impact on a child's developing brain. Whether you
are a caring professional who works with children or simply a next-door neighbor, it is vital
that you recognize the impact you can have on the children around you. To make a difference in
the life of a child does not require a superhuman effort. A chance encounter can be an opportunity
to provide a simple, positive experience for a child. Frequently the difference between a child who
succeeds and one who fails is a caring adult who took the time to be supportive. We hope this Web
site will give you resources to recognize children in your community who have been chronically
exposed to violence and to help in the effort to minimize the damage caused by exposure.
Often we don't see the impact of our day-to-day lives on the
children in our communities. Attachment and bonding with neighbors, teachers, faith leaders, and community
professionals are important steps in any child's development. Attachments with community influence
how children understand interaction with others and how they feel about themselves. Get involved.
Get to know the kids in your community.
