SFTS October 2001 News
Send us your information at sfts@doj.ca.gov and we will put you on our email
information exchange to receive updates on training, research and developments
on the Safe from the Start project.
The Safe from the Start web site will be expanded to include family
violence prevention data as well as resources on promising and evaluated
strategies for reducing children's exposure to violence. A web master will
begin on October 1, 2001. You can also email us directly with questions
and inquiries at sfts@doj.ca.gov.
The Attorney
General's Office has produced a short video directed at law enforcement
as first responders to situations where children may be exposed to violence.
The video contains information from professionals and experts on the impact
law enforcement can have on the lives of children who have been exposed
to violence. The focus is to raise awareness about the effects of violence
on a young child's developing brain; demonstrate one community's approach;
and encourage law enforcement officers to note the names and ages of children
who witness domestic violence on crime reports. The video has been broadcasted
by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and distributed
to all local law enforcement agencies.
The Attorney General's Office is planning a one-day expo at the Doubletree
in Sacramento on March 12, 2002. The expo will focus on promising strategies
for reducing children's exposure to violence, systems change, funding opportunities
and evaluation tools. It will feature workshops, opportunities to interact
with funders, exhibits and grant application critiques.
T&TA is available to all communities upon request. T&TA can be provided
in person or by telephone, fax or email. The assistance may include: materials
on the impact of violence on children, educational videos and facilitation
of community planning meetings. To make a request, email sfts@doj.ca.gov.
Look for these tools to be available at
the March 12, 2002 expo in Sacramento. The educational video will be a 10-15
minute venue useful for community members to spread the word about the connection
of brain development to exposure to violence.
The resource book will be a summary of promising and evaluated strategies and programs that communities
are implementing to prevent and reduce children's exposure to violence.
Senate Bill 131 (Escutia) is pending in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
This bill would provide funding to local law enforcement agencies to partner
with other service organizations to provide programs whose primary focus
is reducing the impact of violence on children. The legislation would create
the "Safe from the Start Partnership" with the California Attorney General's
Office and the California Health and Human Services Agency. For more information
or to view the bill, see http://www.leginfo.ca.gov.
We have plans for producing a promising strategies video, implementation of a site visit program, training for law enforcement personnel, including probation/parole officers and family
court judges, coordination of a public awareness campaign and establishment
of a volunteer program.
