SFTS November 2007 Newsletter
Safe from the Start is currently working on the development of a DVD for parents. The DVD will explain the effect exposure to violence has on a child's developing brain. It should be completed in Spring 2008.
In coordination with First 5 California, UCLA's Center for Children, Families and Communities has posted several links on its website that promote successful school readiness programs and services.

According to a recent report by Jeffrey M. Lacker, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond VA, early childhood education is similar to early investment in capital. The most important investment parents can make in their children’s growth is to provide them with skills early – between birth and age 5. Enhancing early childhood development appears to improve a child’s ability to learn at later stages. The California State Library, California Research Bureau, has published a July 2007 research paper by Ginny Puddefoot, MPH, MPP and Lisa K. Foster, MSW, MPA, titled "Keeping Children Safe When Their Parents Are Arrested" Local Approaches That Work." The paper addresses law enforcement’s role in working with child welfare agencies. A groundbreaking new study finds a significant connection between abusive relationships and teen pregnancy. Published in the journal, Ambulatory Pediatrics, and released last week, the study finds that one quarter of adolescents with histories of abusive relationships said that their abusive partners had actively tried to get them pregnant by manipulating condom use, sabotaging birth control, and making explicit statements about wanting them to become pregnant.
