one more training for criminal justice professionals on "Children and Domestic Violence" in Oakland. If you are a law enforcement agency

October was a very busy month for local Safe from the Start conferences.
Kern County - Two hundred fifty (250) people from numerous disciplines, including educators, social workers, law enforcement,
judicial and community-based organizations attended "The Forgotten Children of Domestic Violence." Linda Chamberlain, Ph.D., M.P.H.,
delivered a keynote presentation on "An Integrated Approach to Childhood Exposure to Violence and Brain Development." Congratulations
to Lupe Perez of the Kern County Probation Department and the Kern County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council for putting together
such a terrific conference.
Imperial County - Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D., was the keynote presenter at the "Children and Domestic Violence" training day held
in El Centro, Imperial County on October 27th. SFTS sponsored Dr. Perry’s presentation to nearly 600 people, including foster parents,
junior college students, counselors and advocates. Participants also heard from local law enforcement leaders, children’s services
administrators, and educators on the importance of preventing and reducing children’s exposure to violence.
Siskiyou County - Attendees at Dr. Bruce Perry’s November 2nd “Children and Domestic Violence” presentation in Yreka, Siskiyou
County, came from as far away as Oregon to attend his workshop which was filled to capacity at 250 participants. Thanks to Jill
Phillips-McClain, Karen Pautz and the staff at the Siskiyou Community Services Council for hosting this successful workshop. See the

Lake County – Dr. Vincent Felitti, Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Diego, gave three training presentations to 90 members of
the medical and social services community and the public in Lakeport and Clearlake on October 19-20. Dr. Felitti presented landmark
research on the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study and the effect these experiences have on the development of a number of adult
health conditions. Susan Jen, Health Leadership Network, hosted the training workshops. For further information about the ACE Study,

Shasta County – Dr. Linda Chamberlain gave training presentations at a Shasta County Policy Makers Luncheon and the annual Respect
Conference in Redding on October 25 and 26 in Redding. Dr. Chamberlain presented information to the groups regarding the effects exposure
to violence has on a child’s developing brain. The Policy Makers Luncheon, attended by 50 Shasta County city officials and business
owners, was hosted by Muffy Berryhill, First 5 Shasta. The Respect Conference, attended by over 250 service providers, was hosted by
Linda Cadd, Shasta County Woman’s Refuge. Pictured below are Debby Peel, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, First 5 Shasta,
Dr. Linda Chamberlain, Karen Maloney, Chair, First 5 Shasta, Muffy Berryhill, Executive Director, First 5 Shasta, and Andrew Deckert, M.D.,
Shasta County Public Officer and First 5 Shasta Commissioner.

Sonoma County – SFTS’s Craig Pierini conducted a workshop on the impact of chronic violence on children at the First Annual Family
Violence Conference October 19th in Santa Rosa. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Santa Rosa Police Department. Approximately 35
people were in attendance.
Sacramento County - Sacramento City Schools’ pre-school staff, nearly 150 strong, attended Safe from the Start training sessions
offered at the Capital City Child Development Center on October 13. Our thanks to John Perez for arranging this training.
Sacramento County - On October 26th, SFTS’s Craig Pierini conducted a workshop on the impact of chronic violence on children at
the Trading Secrets Conference in Sacramento. 60 people attended this workshop, which was co-sponsored by a variety of different community
organizations.
Kings County - On September 29th, Dr. Vincent Felitti presented “The Impact of Childhood Trauma on Long-term Health” to a
packed house at an event co-hosted by organizations in Tulare and Kings Counties. Comments included, “Everything tremendously
excellent, valuable and informative” and “Awesome!! Awesome!!” Our thanks to Beverly Anderson of Synchrony of Visalia and John
Aguirre of the Kings County Child Abuse Prevention Council for organizing this event.
Merced County - On October 26, Dr. Bruce Perry was featured at the Third Annual Responding to Family Violence Conference in
Merced. Nearly 300 people attended this daylong event, hosted by the Child Abuse and Family Violence Prevention Council, A Woman’s
Place of Merced County, Merced County Human Services Agency and the Merced County Department of Public Health. Thank you to Betty
Wetters and Ka Xiong for their parts in organizing this conference.
SFTS recently completed the sixth of eighteen trainings, geared specifically toward criminal justice professionals, on the subject
of children and domestic violence. The latest POST-certified, 8-hour course was held on October 11th in Fresno and was attended by
nearly 100 local law enforcement and probation officers. Dr. Linda Chamberlain and David Love, M.F.T., were the primary presenters
and both continue to receive exceptional evaluations from the participants. Thanks to Robin Leppo of the Fresno County Child Abuse
Prevention Council for her work in bringing the course to Fresno and encouraging such good participation by local professionals.
The next training is scheduled for March 13, 2007 at the Alameda County Family Justice Center in Oakland.

W. Steven Barnett and Clive R. Belfield write about early childhood development and social mobility for The Future of Children’s fall
journal issue. In the article, the authors discuss the links between preschool programs and academic skills, crime, welfare, and teen
parenting.
