SFTS November 2001 News
Over 50 local leaders participated in the tenth Safe from the Start regional
forum held in South Lake Tahoe on September 28, 2001. The forum was held
to reach out to counties unable to participate in the original 9 regional
forums held last fall. Representatives from Inyo, Alpine, Calaveras, Lake
and other adjoining counties heard a keynote presentation from Linda Chamberlain,
Ph. D., MPH, Director, Alaska Family Violence Prevention Project, on the
impact of violence on a child's developing brain. A promising practices
panel presented strategies designed to intervene with children exposed to
violence. Attendees also met in groups by discipline and then by county
to discuss the issue of what each county could do to better meet the needs
of children and families. Over 90% of the participants rated the forum at
excellent or above average.
T&TA is available to collaborative teams who are focusing on children exposed
to violence. T&TA can be provided in person, by telephone or email. Assistance
may include materials, videos or facilitation of community planning meetings.
Currently ten counties are participating in one-day technical assistance
discussion forums in their local areas in cooperation with the SFTS team
and a contractor. For more information, email sfts@doj.ca.gov.
Look for the "Save the Date" flyer on this one-day expo at the Doubletree
in Sacramento on March 12, 2002. The expo will focus on promising strategies
for reducing children's exposure to violence, systems change, funding opportunities
and evaluation tools. It will feature workshops, opportunities to interact
with funders, exhibits and grant application information. Look for updates
on the web site @
www.safefromthestart.org.
Work is underway on both of these
exciting tools to be available at the March 12, 2002 expo in Sacramento.
The educational video will be a 10-15 minute tool useful for community members
to spread the word about the connection of brain development to exposure
to violence. The resource book will be a summary of promising and evaluated
strategies and programs that communities are implementing to prevent and
reduce children's exposure to violence. It will also contain information
on funding sources and basic evaluation tools.
The Attorney General's Office has produced a short video directed at law enforcement
as first responders to situations where children may be exposed to violence.
The video contains information from professionals and experts on the impact
law enforcement can have on the lives of children who have been exposed
to violence. The focus is to raise awareness about the effects of violence
on a young child's developing brain; demonstrate one community's approach;
and encourage law enforcement officers to note, on crime reports, the names
and ages of children who witness domestic violence. The video has been broadcasted
by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and distributed
to all local law enforcement agencies. If you would like to have a copy
of this video contact the SFTS team at sfts@doj.ca.gov.
Send us your information at sfts@doj.ca.gov and we will put you on our e-mail
information exchange to receive updates on training, research and developments
on the Safe from the Start project.
The Safe from the Start web site is undergoing major update and renovation.
It will include facts about children exposed to violence, resources, training
opportunities, funding sources and an array of community connections and
events. We're aiming to have the new look for the web site and available
for use by early 2002. Stay posted at
www.safefromthestart.org.
Do you have a local event or project you'd like us to highlight in a future newsletter?
