SFTS March 2008 Newsletter
Kudos to Local Trainers and Collaboratives!
A multi-agency committee recently completed the 2008 update to the San Diego County
“Domestic Violence and Children Exposed to Domestic Violence Law Enforcement Protocol.” The original protocol was developed in 1990 and updated in 1998 by the Law Enforcement Committee of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council.
The 2008 revision specifically addresses children exposed to domestic violence and the removal of firearms from domestic violence incidents. The San Diego County Protocol begins with a strong policy statement which sets the tone for implementation of the protocol. The document is signed by over twenty San Diego law enforcement agency leaders including police chiefs, the sheriff, the district attorney, the city attorney, the probation chief, and numerous military and border patrol agencies. If you’d like a copy of the San Diego protocol, email your request to sfts@doj.ca.gov.

Orange County Safe from the Start program specialist, Rosemarie Hedegard, and her colleagues, Dr. Kathy Nickerson and Dr. Debra Stout, were invited to Cox Communications to tape a show for the Cox Forum entitled "
Kids and Our Media." The program aired February 7th through February 14th on Cox 3, Orange County. The discussion focused on children's exposure to violence through television. Many thanks to Rosemarie for getting the word out in discussing the role exposure to violence may play in influencing the behavior of our next generation.
Congratulations to long-time Safe from the Start team member, Arlene Greene, who was recently promoted to Assistant Director of the Youth, Schools and Communities Programs in the Crime and Violence Prevention Center.
Sandi Gaarder, formerly the Domestic Violence Prevention Program Manager, will now lead the Safe from the Start project and Lazandra Dial, a new addition to the Center, will assume primary responsibilities for the Domestic Violence Prevention Program.
Sandi can be reached at: sandra.gaarder@doj.ca.gov and Lazandra can be reached at: lazandra.dial@doj.ca.gov.
This will be the last monthly edition of the e-newsletter. It will become a quarterly newsletter next issued in June 2008.

The Rand Corporation recently released a study that shows a sizeable number of California's students fall short of the state's proficiency standards in English-language arts and mathematics when assessed in second and third grade. The study also indicates that several well-designed studies show high-quality preschool programs serving children one or two years before kindergarten can improve school readiness and raise performance on academic achievement tests in the early elementary grades through middle school.
