SFTS NEWS
The Attorney General’s Safe from the Start (SFTS) initiative is partially funded by a grant
from First 5 CA. A one-year extension until 6/30/08 will allow us to complete the SFTS DVD/video for parents. Limited
funds will be available for speakers, technical assistance and the reproduction of resource material. Our outreach
will continue to include the distribution of the monthly e-newsletter and the coordination of training workshops provided
by SFTS team members and the local cadre of trainers who trained under Dr. Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D. Contact Craig.Pierini@doj.ca.gov, Arlene.Greene@doj.ca.gov, or Michael.Kelly@doj.ca.gov for more information.
Our US Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention grant continues through October 2008.
This grant provided funding for development of the “Statewide Law Enforcement Protocol for Children Exposed to Domestic
Violence” which will be distributed to all CA law enforcement agencies and partners in late July. The grant also provides
for continuation of the P.O.S.T.-certified, 8-hour training for criminal justice professionals on the impact of violence
on a child’s developing brain. Ten of these one-day courses have been completed with eight more to be scheduled in the
next 16 months. Limited funds are also available for speakers at local or statewide criminal justice-related conferences.
If you are a law enforcement agency interested in scheduling one of the trainings for your area, contact Arlene.Greene@doj.ca.gov.
The California First 5 Commission reports an urgent need for teachers and early care facilitators to develop school
readiness programs in California. In response to this need, the Foundation for California Community Colleges has
developed the Early Learning and School Readiness AmeriCorps Program (ELSRAP). ELSRAP prepares children for success in
kindergarten and beyond by providing early learning and school readiness services to low-income children and their parents
while preparing Community College students for a life-long career as an early childhood educator.
