SFTS January 2007 Newsletter
SFTS NEWS
Safe from the Start has been very fortunate to have the support of Attorney General Bill Lockyer since we began this initiative.
On Monday, January 8th, he moved on to a new venture when he was sworn in as California State Treasurer. We are looking forward
to working with Jerry Brown, who was sworn in as California’s 31st Attorney General the same day.

A.G. Lockyer with the Safe from the Start team
(left to right) Mike Kelly, Suzy Underwood, Craig Pierini,
Bill Lockyer, Arlene Greene, and Betty White.
Supported by a grant from the U.S. DOJ, the CA Attorney General's Safe from the Start initiative has scheduled
three more trainings for criminal justice professionals on "Children and Domestic Violence" in Oakland, Redding and San Bernardino. If you are a law enforcement agency
interested in bringing this free-of-charge training to your region, contact Arlene.Greene@doj.ca.gov or call (916)
327-9722.
Schedule a presentation tailored to meet the needs of your criminal justice agency, professional organization or upcoming conference.
Topics include: domestic violence and children, child and adolescent brain development and the effects of exposure to violence.
Information on promising practices and intervention strategies will be shared. The target audiences for these presentations are:
law enforcement officers, parole agents, probation officers, prosecutors, judges, court personnel, and statewide criminal justice
professional organizations. For more information on the training or to request a presentation, contact Betty.White@doj.ca.gov or call (916)
323-2606.
RELATED RESEARCH
AResearch has shown that "Five Promises" affect the development and lives of America's youth; caring adults, safe places and constructive
use of time, a healthy start and development, an effective education, and opportunities to make a difference helping others. This report
from America's Promise Alliance presents and analyzes the results of three new studies. It finds that when youth are provided with at
least four out of five fundamental resources, their life chances for success dramatically increase and damaging gaps separating low-income
and minority youth from other youth are significantly reduced.

RELATED RESOURCES
The following link will take you to the latest edition of ACE Reporter, a free newsletter reporting the findings of the Adverse Childhood
Experiences (ACE) Study. The ACE Study is an ongoing collaboration between Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention in Atlanta; it examines the relationship between childhood trauma and long-term health problems in adulthood.
This edition focuses on Depression and Suicide and offers both the adult survivor's and the researcher's perspectives. http://www.acestudy.org/pub-acereporter.php.
Cities, Counties, Kids, and Families: The Essential Role of Local Government, by Sidney L. Gardner, outlines a model for
developing strategic policy for responding to children and family issues in local governments. It also discusses fifteen strategic
roles that local government can play-most of which do not require direct funding, but depends upon the scarce resource of leadership.
The book describes policy and analytical tools used by cities and counties, and makes a case for using these tools more strategically.
It calls for strategic policy to respond to the four critical forces affecting children and family policy: families; race and culture;
communities and neighborhoods; and regionalism. Finally, the book reviews policy in four critical areas affecting local governments:
education and school readiness; substance abuse; youth development; and family support programs. It concludes with predictions of issues
that will affect cities and counties in the future. http://www.univpress.com/ISBN/0761830944.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
This Foundation supports underrepresented and underprivileged children and youth in the arts, education and health areas. Grants will
range from $2,500 to $5,000. Grants are being sought from community-based, grass-roots organizations that work with children and youth.
