SFTS NEWS
In December, Safe from the Start conducted a Training of Trainers with Dr. Bruce Perry in Sacramento, consisting
of an 8-hour live training with Dr. Perry and four post-training Web casts. The 35 participants, who included County
Contacts and other partners, received a set of materials from The Child Trauma Academy that included 500 PowerPoint slides
to use in their own presentations. The hands-on training that Dr. Perry provided has enhanced the ability of attendees to
go out into their communities to train others on the impact of childhood exposure to violence. The response from
participants has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are hoping to schedule another Training of Trainers day sometime
this year.
SCHOOL READINESS INFORMATION
A study of state-funded pre-kindergarten programs in five states (Michigan, New Jersey, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and
West Virginia) recently released by the National Institute for Early Education Research revealed significant improvement
in children's early language, literacy and mathematical development. The study also found that children attending
state-funded pre-k programs improved significantly regardless of ethnic background or economic circumstances.
For more information, the study is available at http://nieer.org/docs/index.php?DocID=129.
The National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education has produced “Healthy Kids, Healthy
Care,” a Web site that contains 34 key health and safety practices for parents and families to look for when evaluating
and choosing childcare and early education programs. Parents can also use the resources to help improve the quality of
their child's current program. Caregivers and teachers may find the resources useful to evaluate and improve their services
and environments.

RELATED RESEARCH
Recent years have seen an explosion in electronic media marketed directly at the very youngest children in our society,
yet very little is known about how these changes have played out in young people's lives. In order to help understand
the implications, the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a national study of more than 1,000 parents of children ages
six months through six years.

RELATED RESOURCES
The new Web site by First 5 CA called, "The Power of Preschool," focuses on "What Everyone Should Know" about preschool.

Whether you are a teacher, law enforcement officer, community volunteer, parent, or other adult who works with children
in grades pre-k through five, you can help protect children and guide them in developing the skills they need to make
good choices today and for the rest of their lives. The National Crime Prevention Council and McGruff the Crime Dog have
come up with some tips and resources to reduce bullying, including brochures, comics, and lesson plans.

On February 15th, the Organizers’ Collaborative (OC), a Boston based nonprofit group, will release a new version of its
Organizers Database tool for nonprofit organizations. Developed over four years with input from over 100 community
organizations, this free program seeks to help small nonprofits by giving them a way to track members, prospects and
donors with software designed specifically for the needs of smaller organizations. The OC claims the 350-plus organizations
already using the software have increased donations by over $1 million.

Often when rape is reported in the news, the report is followed by tips for women on how to prevent sexual assault: don’t
go out late, never leave your drink unattended, don’t let strangers give you rides, and so on. But men can prevent rape
too? This is the message behind MyStrength, a new program debuting in high schools across California. The program enlists
young men to take action to stop rape and highlights the role young men can play in developing healthy and safe relationships.
