SFTS NEWS

New SFTS Mini-Brochure and Poster
Safe from the Start is pleased to announce the arrival of two exciting new products available in both English and Spanish: a mini-brochure entitled "Ten simple things that can boost my brain power," and a Safe from the Start poster. The mini-brochure describes actions that anyone can take to boost a child's brain power. The poster, which comes in various sizes, illustrates how seeing and hearing repeated violence at home can hurt a child's brain and future.

SCHOOL READINESS INFORMATION

Building the Foundation for Bright Futures
This recently released report, "Building the Foundation for Bright Futures: Final Report of the National Governors Association Task Force on School Readiness," is a guide for governors that ties policy recommendations to concrete examples of state initiatives to promote school readiness. It includes key considerations for state policymakers, and resources to help inform their decisions. The guide follows the same readiness framework as the task force report, presenting what states are doing to build Ready States and to support Ready Schools, Ready Communities, Ready Families, and Ready Children.

NEW RESEARCH

The Importance of Resilience
Why do some children bounce back from adversity better than others - and can that quality be taught? A recent article in Time Magazine states, "You can't teach resilience, but researchers have identified some skills such as developing a sense of autonomy or being a good reader that increase the chances that a child will become a productive member of society."

This article is available for purchase at http://www.time.com.

Bullying—Is It Part of Growing Up, or Part of School Violence?
Bullying at school is getting new attention as researchers find mental health implications in the fact that as many as one-third of students say they have either bullied someone or been the target of bullying. The December issue of InFocus explains that more effective intervention is needed, including clear rules and strong social norms against bullying to create a safer school environment. These approaches are common in countries such as England and Norway, but are less frequently implemented in the United States.
