SFTS December 2007 Newsletter
A one-day training conference for Safe from the Start County Contacts, the 2005 and 2007 Train the Trainer (TTT) graduates, and other community team members will be held in Sacramento on April 21, 2008. The conference will feature Bruce Perry, MD, PhD and Lt. Mark Wynn, Nashville Police Department (retired) focusing on taking the brain science - exposure to violence message to the community level. Discussion of the Statewide Law Enforcement Protocol for Children Exposed to Domestic Violence will also be featured. We hope to open the conference to other partners, space permitting. More information will be announced soon.
The Statewide LawEnforcement Protocol for Children Exposed to Domestic Violence was mailed to all CA law enforcement agencies in September. The document was sent to police chiefs and sheriffs and domestic violence units and training units of the law enforcement agencies. A similar document was mailed to domestic violence, social service, and child abuse partner organizations. We are encouraged by the number of departments taking steps to implement the protocol and view the videos included with the document. We’d like to hear from you if you need assistance or have comments related to the protocol. This recent comment was received from a police department in Southern California:
"This
briefing video was especially effective with my Lieutenant. He really
didn’t understand the purpose of the protocol and this video turned him
around. I would encourage other department administrators to view it if
they are in doubt as to whether this program is necessary.”
The protocol can be downloaded at Resources: Law Enforcement Protocol or by contacting Safe from the Start.
The Safe from the Start“Children and Domestic Violence: Training for Criminal Justice Professionals” has been scheduled in several locations. The Social Science Research Center of CA State University, Fullerton has completed their final report on the Safe from the Start Initiative. The full report will be posted on the Safe from the Start web site soon.

According to a recent report by Jeffrey M. Lacker, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond VA, early childhood education is similar to early investment in capital. The most important investment parents can make in their children’s growth is to provide them with skills early – between birth and age 5. Enhancing early childhood development appears to improve a child’s ability to learn at later stages.
