SFTS NEWS: Reducing Children's Exposure to Violence

Advanced Domestic Violence Training in Solano County
Lt. Mark Wynn, Nashville Police Department (retired), was the featured trainer at the “Advanced Domestic Violence” training on July 11, 2007 in Solano County . The event was hosted by Vacaville and Fairfield Police Departments and co-sponsored by the CA Attorney General’s Safe from the Start Initiative. Lt. Wynn presented to 250 Solano, Contra Costa, and Sacramento County criminal justice professionals at the Ulatis Cultural Center in Vacaville . Training segments included: Responding to Children at the Domestic Violence Crime Scene, Avoiding Dual Arrest in Domestic Violence Investigations, and Stalking and Domestic Violence. Congratulations to both Fairfield and Vacaville Police Departments for leading the way in bringing this important training to criminal justice staff.


School Readiness Information:

Sacramento County's First 5 Program
Supported by matching funds from First 5 CA, First 5 Sacramento began a school readiness expansion program in Rio Linda in July 2007 to serve underprivileged children. First 5 Sacramento also selected the Elk Grove Unified School District to pilot a preschool “bridging model” which would implement voluntary preschool for all children in Sacramento County.

Early Intervention For Needy Kids Pays Off
A 19-year study of kids enrolled in early intervention programs for low-income children in Chicago shows encouraging statistics relative to higher educational achievement and lower felony arrests. Foster Care Youth-Led Community Projects
Youth Service America

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and Youth Service America have announced that YouthPower grants of up to $1,000 each will be awarded to support youth-led service projects.  Youth-serving organizations that have prior experience in working with youth in the foster care system are eligible to apply, provided that they engage foster youth in the planning and implementing a service project.  Service projects will take place as part of Global Youth Service Day on April 25-27, 2008.
